Volunteers Information
The Lockwood Fire Protection District is manned solely by volunteer fire fighters. There are currently 16 volunteers in our district. These volunteers donate their time and effort to protect your property against fire, and respond to medical emergencies.

Not only do volunteers take time to serve in emergencies, they also dedicate considerable time for necessary training. EMT certification requires 6 months of training, 2 nights a week, 4 hours each night plus considerable study time. There are classes for fire fighting and rescue training.

The basic fire fighting skills class is a 60 hour class. These are but a few of the classes that are part of each volunteer’s training schedule. This training helps them serve our district as professionally as any paid fire fighter. Although the time these volunteers dedicate to our community is considerable, each volunteer appreciates the chance to offer their services and enjoys the opportunity and experiences that volunteering provides. All they ask for in return, like anyone else, is respect and appreciation for their time and dedication.

Each volunteer wears a pager that receives an area-specific alert signal when there is a 911 call in our district. With the page signal, the volunteer receives information regarding the type of emergency: whether a medical or fire situation. Our LFPD volunteers are often the first to reach the scene of an emergency. If additional assistance is required, California Dept. of Forestry will provide additional manpower or vehicles. It is our local volunteers' first response that is so critical in an emergency situation.

Our volunteers also respond to mutual aid requests. This occurs when there is a fire in another district or county. Volunteers assisted in the Calaveras County and Emigrant Gap fires, last summer. For mutual aid requests, only three or four volunteers with one engine are allowed to leave at any given time, leaving the Lockwood Fire Protection District well covered. Our volunteers are paid by the State of California for mutual aid responses. In addition, the district is reimbursed for the use and maintenance of any of its fire engines.

LFPD Cadet Program
Hey teens . . . don’t know what to do after you graduate?  How about a career as a Firefighter? LFPD has a Cadet Program that can start you on the path to a very rewarding career as a paid Firefighter. Learn as a volunteer with the LFPD* and you may land a paid position in the future. Some of our volunteer Firefighters are also paid Firefighters with West Sacramento and CDF.

1. Become a Cadet as early as age 16. (Written permission required from parent/guardian)

2. Learn teamwork - work with the BEST Firefighters in the County.

3. 600 hours of initial training paid for by LFPD.

4. Learn what it means to save a life, save a home, help others.

5. At age 21, you will have all the skills and knowledge to apply for and obtain a
rewarding paid firefighter position anywhere in the world.

Working and training under the direction of Fire Department staff, the Cadet will experience the day-to-day operations, maintenance, and training of the Department. During ride-along opportunities, Cadets will witness and have limited participation in emergency operations. The combination of learning and experience along with the opportunity to demonstrate his/her positive attitude and work ethic will help prepare the Cadet to achieve fire service career employment.

While not mandatory, we do ask you spend a minimum of 2 years as a volunteer with the LFPD. Many remain with the LFPD as volunteers while working in other paid positions.

So what are you waiting for?

Drop by Station #1 any Monday night at 7pm. The station is at 23141 Shake Ridge Road, 3 miles above Daffodil Hill. Meet the team and find out if a paid firefighter career is in your future

A career saving lives and property . . .  it doesn’t get any better than that!
