Amador-El Dorado Unit Declares End of Fire Season
Camino Unit Chief Bill Holmes will formally end the 2008 Fire Season in the Amador-El Dorado Unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) on Monday, November 3, 2008 at 8 a.m. The unit includes Amador and El Dorado counties as well as the eastern foothills of Sacramento County.

Burn Permits are not required, but the Air Quality Management District will be determining “burn days” or “no burn days” until May 1, 2009 when burn permits will again be required. Please make sure to call the burn information line immediately prior to burning.

Don’t forget the following proper burning techniques:

Call your local burn information number to make sure it is a permitted burn day, because the Air Pollution Control District still controls whether or not you can burn. The number for Amador County is (209) 223-6246 and El Dorado County is (530) 621-5897

  • Never leave the fire unattended.
  • Make sure you have proper clearance cut to mineral soil around the pile(s) and have a shovel and hose on site so that you can
quickly put out any fire that may escape from the burn pile(s).
  • Do not burn on windy days, as the wind can carry fire brands and set fires quite a distance from your original burn pile.
  • Be considerate of your neighbors and where the smoke from your burning piles may drift.
  • If you have questions or concerns about proper burning technique, please contact your local fire station personnel for further information.
  • In case of an emergency, call 911.

The Lockwood Fire Protection District (LFPD)

The Lockwood Fire Protection District (LFPD) provides fire protection and emergency medical response to its local residents. The District is located within Amador County, California, stretching along the Shake Ridge Road corridor from Quartz Mountain Road to Dew Drop Road. The Lockwood Fire Department serves a resident population of about 1,000 people, as well as visitors within the District, and responds to approximately 200 emergency calls a year.

A Board of Directors governs Lockwood Fire Protection District. The five directors are elected by voters in the district for four-year terms. The Board of Directors meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM at Station #1.

The Lockwood Fire Protection District is manned solely by volunteer fire fighters. There are currently 16 volunteers managed by a Fire Chief. These volunteers donate their time and effort to protect the district’s property against fire and respond to medical emergencies. The Fire Department’s main fire station, Station #1, is located at 23141 Shake Ridge Road,Volcano, CA. A second fire station is located at Hale Road and Shake Ridge Road. The Fire Department's equipment includes structure fire engine, wild land fire engine, water tenders, squad fire vehicle, and command fire vehicle. The Lockwood Fire Department staff is available to the district’s residents to answer questions concerning fire safety and related matters.
